Amphitheater
Free Concerts and More!
The historic Amphitheater in Ottawa Park, built by the WPA between 1935 and 1936, sits on a scenic slope surrounded by trees in a bird sanctuary. The 500 tons of stone used came from a quarry near Whitehouse. The small shrubs and trees planted back then have now grown to nearly 100 feet tall!
Over the years, the seating area has been updated, and a handicap-accessible ramp, stage with backdrops, power, and storage facility have been added. With a capacity of about 750 people, it’s the only permanent venue for free open-air concerts in the area.
Since its opening, the Amphitheater has hosted church services, Broadway productions, Shakespeare plays, magic shows, and lots of live music. Free summer concerts have been a tradition since at least 1963, sponsored annually by the Park Board.
